Aldosterone levels in patients with different types of eating disorders

Abnormal eating behavior is often accompanied by peripheral edema, both during weight loss and nutritional rehabilitation. The occurrence of edema during purging behavior leads patients to perceive it as "obesity" and intensify weight loss efforts. A probable cause of edema is secondary hyperaldosteronism associated with pseudo-Bartter syndrome, which in turn can lead to chronic kidney disease. Aldosterone levels were analyzed in 152 patients in this category to provide suggestions for optimizing drug treatment aimed at correcting aldosterone levels and for a detailed study of pseudo-Bartter syndrome. It was found that one of two patients with purgative and restrictive type anorexia nervosa, as well as 75% of patients with bulimia nervosa, had laboratory evidence of hyperaldosteronism upon hospital discharge. Patients with a history of diuretic abuse showed higher aldosterone levels than patients with a history of laxative or emetic abuse.
